Portsmouth Muay Thai is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all members, coaches, staff, and visitors. We recognise our legal and moral responsibility to minimise risks and ensure training is conducted safely.

 

This policy outlines our approach to health and safety in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.

 

Policy Statement

Portsmouth Muay Thai will take all reasonably practicable steps to:

  • Provide a safe training environment

  • Prevent accidents and injuries

  • Maintain safe equipment and facilities

  • Provide appropriate supervision and coaching

  • Ensure safe training practices

  • Comply with relevant health and safety legislation

All members, coaches, and visitors share responsibility for maintaining a safe environment.

 

Responsibilities

Gym Owner / Management Responsibilities

Portsmouth Muay Thai will:

  • Maintain safe premises and equipment

  • Identify and manage risks

  • Provide appropriate safety guidance

  • Maintain first aid provisions

  • Ensure safeguarding procedures are followed

  • Maintain incident and accident records

  • Review health and safety procedures regularly

  

Coach Responsibilities

Coaches must:

  • Deliver safe and controlled training

  • Supervise members appropriately

  • Monitor member safety

  • Stop unsafe training practices

  • Ensure protective equipment is used where appropriate

  • Respond appropriately to injuries

 

Member Responsibilities

Members must:

  • Follow coach instructions

  • Follow gym rules

  • Train responsibly

  • Use equipment safely

  • Inform coaches of injuries or medical conditions

  • Maintain personal hygiene

Members must not train while injured or unwell where it may cause risk.

 

Risk Management

We regularly assess risks relating to:

  • Training activities

  • Sparring and partner drills

  • Equipment use

  • Gym environment

Steps are taken to reduce risks wherever reasonably practicable.

 

Equipment Safety

Portsmouth Muay Thai will:

  • Maintain equipment in safe condition

  • Inspect equipment regularly

  • Remove damaged equipment from use

 

Members must:

  • Use equipment properly

  • Report damaged equipment

 

Safe Training Practices

Safety measures include:

  • Controlled sparring

  • Appropriate supervision

  • Progressive training suitable to ability level

  • Use of protective equipment where required

  • Clear safety instructions from coaches

Coaches may restrict activities where safety concerns arise.

 

First Aid and Injury Management

Portsmouth Muay Thai will:

  • Maintain a first aid kit on site

  • Provide basic first aid where appropriate

  • Record accidents and injuries

Emergency services will be contacted if necessary.

Members are responsible for seeking further medical treatment where required.

 

Accident and Incident Reporting

All accidents, injuries, or incidents must be reported to a coach or staff member as soon as possible.

Accidents will be recorded and reviewed where appropriate.

 

Fire Safety and Emergency Procedures

Portsmouth Muay Thai will:

  • Maintain clear exit routes

  • Ensure emergency exits remain accessible

  • Follow fire safety procedures

In the event of an emergency, members must follow coach or staff instructions.

 

Hygiene and Infection Control

Members must:

  • Maintain good personal hygiene

  • Wear clean training clothing

  • Avoid training with infectious conditions

  • Cover wounds appropriately

This helps protect all members.

 

Facility Safety

We will ensure:

  • Training areas are maintained safely

  • Hazards are addressed promptly

  • Floors and surfaces are kept safe

Members should report hazards immediately.

 

Safeguarding and Welfare

We are committed to safeguarding children and vulnerable individuals.

All safeguarding concerns will be handled according to our Safeguarding Policy.

 

Monitoring and Review

This policy will be reviewed regularly and updated where necessary.
